Community Barn Quilt Unveiling
In early May, 2020, the Osgoode Township Museum announced its Rural Ottawa Barn Quilt Trail Project.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic started, they looked at ways to engage community members and bring visitors to our community while maintaining physical distancing. They invited families, farm owners and agricultural businesses to create a barn quilt as a way to celebrate our rural heritage. This project is a combination of a tourism attraction, a business marketing tool, and a showcase of our unique community history. As a permanent part of our landscape, it will build community and provide the perfect opportunity to expand cultural tourism in the Osgoode Ward.
Barn quilts tell stories about individual farms, historical events or communities while also adding visual interest to the countryside and increasing rural tourism.
The Metcalfe Fair has reached out to its members, and the community at large, to help create two “quilts”, to be displayed on our iconic Agricultural Hall. Several artists have been busy creating and painting their blocks, and they have now been pieced together to make the pieces of art that were unveiled on Saturday, October 3rd.
